<p>When Roberta Przybylski retired at 55, she never thought she’d teach adults, but after working as an educator, a technical writer and teaching herself how to use the computer, it seemed like a natural fit. She began volunteering at Austin Computer Learning Center, a non-profit and part of the Austin Groups for the Elderly where for the last 12 years she’s taught hundreds of adults how to use their computer. Roberta recently won the SXSW Dewey Winburne for her community service in teaching with technology and the effects are lasting throughout the community. </p>

<p>With the help of ProShow Gold and Producer, Roberta has taught a variety of people including veterans from World War II and Vietnam to returning Iraq and Afghan vets how to make memories come alive in the most professional way using their old photos, favorite music and voice recordings. Local philanthropy chapters, such as Austin Samaritans led by Dr. John Doty, a noted Oncologist, have raised money with moving video slideshows created by Lynn Herrin that capture the organization’s mission through poignant photos and stories. </p>

<p>One of her students, Bert Crowson, a retired minister at University Avenue Church of Christ and Director of Disaster Response Program for the Texas State Department now uses ProShow to show the congregation “People You Need to Know” in their 80s. “In these church videos I wanted to give honor to those older members and tell them how much we love and appreciate them. So often the kind words spoken are said too late and only the family is able to benefit from them at a memorial service,” Bert said. </p>

<br />Sold to an anonymous buyer in 2006, this Expressionist classic exudes Pollock paintings trademark “drip” style. The painting was completed on an 8’ x 4’ fiberboard sheet, with thick amounts of mostly yellow and brown paint drizzled on top. </p>

<p>2. $  137.5 million: Willem de Kooning. Woman III (1953)&#13;<br />
<br />Steven Cohen bought the painting in 2006. Woman III represents the only Kooning “Woman” painting still owned by a private collector. Combined with Pollock, the dollars indicate that American abstract Expressionism has surpassed Impression as the most valued art period and style, although who knows how long that will last?</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>3. $  135 million: Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) &#13;<br />
<br />When cosmetic tycoon Ronald Lauder acquired this Klimt painting in 2006 it sent shockwaves through the artistic community. The painting was part of several which had been recently returned to the heirs of Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer after the Nazis confiscated his paintings in WWII. This ornate masterpiece took three years to complete and measures 54.3 by 54.3 inches. It is made of oil and gold on canvas. </p>

<p>4. $  106.5 million: Pablo Picasso. Nude, Green Leaves and Bust (1932)&#13;<br />
<br />An anonymous buyer in 2010 purchased this colorful and sensual Picasso masterpiece. It has been reported by the New York Times to be the most expensive painting ever sold at auction (as of 2010). At 64 x 51 inches, it shows Picasso’s mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter, with Picasso’s profile cleverly disguised in the blue background. </p>

<p>5. $  104.1 million: Pablo Picasso. Garçon a la pipe (1904) &#13;<br />
<br />Picasso once again makes an appearance, this time with a painting of a young smoker with a pipe sitting in front of a floral background, sold to an anonymous buyer in 2004. The sale represented two landmarks for the art community: it was the first time the $  100 million barrier was broken and it also surpassed the 1990 record for most expensive painting ever sold, held by van Gogh and the sale of Portrait of Dr. Gachet. </p>

<p>6. $  100 million: Andy Warhol. Eight Elvises 1963&#13;<br />
<br />An anonymous buyer fetched this piece in 2008. This Warhol masterpiece measures more than 12 feet long, and even more so in price: It exceeded the previous world record for a Warhol work, which was held by Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) when it sold for $  71.7 million in 2007. </p>

<p>7. $  95.2 million: Pablo Picasso. Dora Maar au Chat (1941)&#13;<br />
<br />Picasso’s third painting in the top 10 list, bought by an anonymous buyer in 2006, is of his lover, Dora Maar, who he met in France while it was under occupation by the Nazis. Ms Maar was a native Parisian, but raised in Argentina and therefore fluent in Spanish, Picasso’s native language. The two lived together for many years, with this portrait just one of many Maar posed for. </p>

<p>8. $  91 million: Titian. Diana and Actaeon (1556-1559)&#13;<br />
<br />Bought by the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery in London in 2009, this magnificent painting has all the splendor and beauty of Titian&#8217;s famed “painted poetries.” It was previously owned by the Duke of Sutherland, who offered it to the U.K public instead of private art collectors. Its sister picture, Diana and Callisto, is also expected to be bought by the museums in 2012. According to the Guardian in 2009, the acquisition was the largest public purchase of a single work of art in the UK ever. </p>

<p>9. $  87.9 million: Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer II (1912)&#13;<br />
<br />Klimt made a reappearance in the top 10 list when an anonymous buyer purchased Klimt’s second version of Adele in 2006, this time in a more traditional oil on canvas painting. The portrait measures 75 x 47 inches and is the only time one model has been painted twice by Klimt. </p>

<p>10. $  86.3 million: Francis Bacon. Tryptich 1976 (1976), &#13;<br />
<br />Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the famous Bacon piece in 2008. The work was one of Bacon’s favorites, evidenced by his remark in 1979: “Triptychs are the thing I like doing most, and I think this may be related to the thought I&#8217;ve sometimes had of making a film. I like the juxtaposition of the images separated on three different canvases. So far as my work has any quality, I often feel perhaps it is the triptychs have the most quality.” </p>

<p> Two months ago, employees at SportSoleil RhythmicGymnasticStore.com were surprised to get a rush order for Rhythmic Gymnastics Ribbons and Ribbon Sticks from a studio in Los Angeles known for producing television commercials for top brands. </p>

<p>“The customer called us and explained that they needed several ribbons and ribbon sticks the next day, because they were filming the Pepsi Superbowl commercial and wanted to include rhythmic gymnastic equipment in the commercial!”, said Superstar Head of Customer Service, Michelle.</p>

<p>“We had all the items in stock – they needed white, red and blue ribbons and white ribbon sticks.  We packaged everything up as quickly as possible and shipped it out overnight to California.  The customer received it the next day and was thrilled with the high quality rhythmic gymnastic equipment.”</p>

<p>The team of employees at SportSoleil, (an official distributor of Sasaki, Pastorelli, Chacott, Bleyer, Sogo, ZenRG and others) waited anxiously for SuperBowl Sunday to arrive.  </p>

<p>“As the day drew nearer we became more excited! We have had orders from rhythmic gymnastic world champions and even from Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas show in the past (which sometimes features rhythmic gymnasts, ribbons and hoops), but having our rhythmic equipment in a SuperBowl commercial is big and definitely a first for our company!”, exclaims Michelle. </p>

<p>The Pepsi ad featured Melanie Amaro (winner of The X Factor (US), first season), and Sir Elton John. John plays a King holding a talent contest. Amaro wins the contest by singing Aretha Franklin’s song, Respect. Unfortunately, while court jesters hold rhythmic hoops and perform some gymnastic moves in the commercial, footage featuring SportSoleil&#8217;s Rhythmic Gymnastic Equipment didn’t make the final cut.  </p>

<p>“We were disappointed, but it was exciting to have the anticipation of it anyways!,” exclaimed a very positive Michelle. </p>

<p> “Elton John was wearing a crown and 3-inch gold heels and everyone knows how difficult it is to perform rhythmic gymnastics in heels!  It was too bad that the studio didn’t order some rhythmic half shoes from us for Sir Elton to wear – he may have had a chance then! We also sell beautiful Swarovski Crystal Hair Nets for buns, and we think that&#8217;s more practical than a crown, but still glamorous,” states Michelle. </p>

<p>Spring is just around the corner, and many New Yorkers are starting to turn their attention to their neglected yards, terraces, or rooftop spaces and beginning to make plans for spring gardens. To many people living in a city like New York, creating a garden is their primary means for creating a sanctuary away from the urban hustle and bustle that they have to deal with during the rest of the day. Amber Freda Home &amp; Garden Design seeks to help city dwellers on their way to developing an outdoor oasis with a few seasonal tips from our years of experience creating beautiful urban paradises on rooftops, terraces, and backyards in the NYC area.</p>

<p>Having an outdoor space is really like having additional rooms in your apartment. Space is a valuable commodity, so adding outdoor rooms for sitting, eating, relaxing, and entertaining is not only aesthetically pleasing, but a smart investment as well. A well-designed garden is built to engage the senses and transport visitors to a place of peace and beauty. In a land of concrete and steel, these gardens are some of the most treasured green spaces on the planet.</p>

<p>The Four Season Garden is of particular interest to me because I believe the garden is a place for beauty and enjoyment in every season. Spring is a celebration of new growth and blooms, summer is a season of ripening vines and lush tropical plants, fall is the season for graceful grasses and the rich hues of leaves turning colors, and winter is a season of evergreens, berries, and the beauty of tree bark such as the brown and white exfoliating bark of the birch tree. Every season is ripe with beauty if we just know how to encourage it.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Urban gardening comes with its own unique set of challenges. Roof gardens have to deal with extremes in temperature and high winds that can quickly shred large-leaf plants not suitable to life atop a mountain-like rooftop. Most roof gardens are in somewhat remote locations, where you can sometimes work for an entire day on a garden without seeing another living soul, even though on the street below thousands of people may have walked by without a clue that a beautiful garden paradise exists several floors up. Roof gardens are like little secret jewels hidden out of reach in the clouds, nestled between skyscrapers and birds.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>If planting a roof garden seems daunting, here are a few tips to help get you on your way to creating an urban paradise:</p>

<p>CHECK BUILDING CODES</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Before starting a garden, check with the building superintendent to see about building codes and weight limits for rooftops and terraces.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>USE APPROPRIATE CONTAINERS</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Containers should be lightweight and portable, resist cracking in freezing weather, and hold enough soil to minimize the drying effects of wind and sun.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>INSTALL AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In the heat of summer, plants exposed to a full day of sun and wind may need constant watering and can easily burn to a crisp if forgotten about for even a day.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>KNOW YOUR CONDITIONS</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The intense sun, wind, and freezing temperatures on a rooftop or terrace can be a full zone or two different than that on the street down below. A temperature gauge can help to determine whether or not you&#8217;re gardening in the arctic or the Sahara.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Buy smaller-leaved plants that won&#8217;t get torn apart by the wind. Plants should also be able to tolerate a wide range of temperature extremes. Conical-shaped trees tend to do better and won&#8217;t get blown over by wind.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>DESIGN FOR SEASONAL INTEREST</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>If you can see the garden from indoors, it&#8217;s a good idea to mix evergreens with annuals and perennials in the same planters so you will have colorful blooms in warmer months and something green to look at when the weather turns frosty.</p>

<p>PROTECT PLANTS FROM THE ELEMENTS</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Stabilize evaporation rates and freeze-thaw cycles by applying a 2-3&#8243; layer of mulch to your containers.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>SPRING CLEANING ESSENTIALS</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Over time, the soil in your containers will start to decompose and lose its nutritional value. Remove the top 1-2&#8243; of soil from containers each spring and add fresh soil to reinvigorate plants.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>FERTILIZE, FERTILIZE, FERTILIZE</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Plants in containers eat up fertilizer much more quickly than plants in the ground. During periods of active growth, you should plan on fertilizing every two weeks for blooming and fruiting plants and once a month for all others.</p>

<p>PRUNE AND DIVIDE</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Very large plants will need to be pruned or divided every year to keep them from outgrowing their containers. Prune spring-flowering plants after they bloom. Prune all others after the first frost.</p>
